How to receive grant funding
The following information has been written for local community groups who are interested in applying for funding for activities.
1. Decide what type of grant your organisation requires
This depends on the type of service, program or project you want to undertake.
2. Identify funding sources
There are many websites and databases you can access to determine which types of funding are available. Informative websites include those of state and federal government departments such as the NSW Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation and the Department of Environment and Water Resources.
Other general websites include:
Grantslink www.grantslink.gov.au Arts Information www.artsinfo.net.au Community Builders www.communitybuilders.nsw.gov.au Westir www.westir.org.au
3. Be aware of the rules
Always request a copy of the guidelines and application form before applying for the grant to ensure the project you are proposing is appropriate to that particular program. These documents will also include other vital information such as the funding limit, closing date, eligible applicants etc.
4. Application
Ensure you have covered all necessary requirements and that your application is concise. It is important that the focus of your application does not stray from what the funding body is asking for; include only relevant information. Seek support from local groups and authorities where required. Funding bodies are usually more likely to approve an application where partnerships are involved. Avoid simple errors by asking a third party to proofread the application.
Note: Always ensure your application is completed with sufficient time to submit it by the due date. Most funding bodies are insistent they will not receive any submissions after the due date.
5. Notification
Congratulations if your application is successful! You should receive a funding agreement which you will need to comply with completely to receive the funding, so read each section carefully. If you have been unsuccessful, ensure you request the reasons why. This can help you with your next application.
