Consulting with people with a disability and identifying needs in the Liverpool area with a view to resolution
Implementing initiatives for those with disabilities identified in Liverpool City Council's Social Plan

Disability Action Plan

Liverpool City Council is committed to eliminating discrimination against people with disabilities.

Council has produced the Disability Action Plan as a significant step towards meeting its obligations to people with a disability, under the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act, 1992 and provisions of the NSW Local Government Act, 1993.

The Disability Action Plan was endorsed by Council on 23 February 2004 and publicly launched on 14 April 2004.

The Plan incorporates Council's commitment to improving access through the delivery of information, services and facilities to the community. The adopted Disability Action Plan includes an annual review that includes:

Relevance and usefulness of the DAP as perceived by internal and external stakeholders through consultation
Continuing public awareness raising and promotion of DAP outcomes met by Council
Annual report to be provided to Council.

The summary report describes progress on key actions by incorporating a 'whole of Council' approach and committing both time and resources to the implementation of the Disability Action Plan. Through a commitment from all responsible Units, Council will continue to meet its obligations.

The Disability Action Plan has six key result areas:

Physical Access - Progressively improve access to Council owned and managed buildings, facilities and recreation and open space.

Access to Information, Events and Services - Improve access to Council information, events, communication and services.

Traffic, Transport and Parking - Further develop an integrated accessible transport system in Liverpool.

Employment - Support people with disabilities having equal access to employment opportunities within Council.

Planning and Development - Ensure that access needs are considered in planning and development processes controlled and influenced by Council.

Awareness - Increase awareness of the needs of people with disabilities within Council and the community.

Representatives of each responsible Council unit have provided an update on progress made on the agreed outcomes.

Summaries of the six key actions are highlighted below:

Traffic, Transport and Parking	Implement upgrade work to footpaths and kerb ramps in the Liverpool CBD in alignment with the Pedestrian Access Mobility Plan.	Council committed $100,000 per year over five years for the upgrade First year allocated work was completed in June 2005 Needs of people with disabilities have been considered in the planning and building of new footpaths and ramps.	Footpaths and kerb ramps have been upgraded in Liverpool and surrounding areas, including Elizabeth, College, Castlereagh and Norfolk Street CBD and surrounding areas are now more accessible for people with disabilities.
Planning and Development	Ensure that access is considered in the assessment process of all new public development.	Aged and Disability worker attends pre DA meetings Access Committee provides feedback.	Community access in new 'public developments' maximised More accessible housing is being built and the needs of people with a disability are being addressed.
Awareness	Liverpool Ageing and Disability service directory to be developed.	Directory was developed in July 2004, being a joint venture between Council's Ageing and Disability Worker, Commonwealth Carelink Centre, Outreach worker and Bankstown Area Multicultural Network HACC Development Project.	Directory is an excellent resource both for service providers and members of the community Directory has been promoted and distributed widely with service providers and in the community Council had been acknowledged for printing the directory.
Employment	Review documents sent out to potential applicants, to include statements encouraging applicants to discuss any special needs during the selection process.	A person with a hearing impairment was assisted at his interview and induction by Council arranging for a Signer to assist with communication Council is seeking advice from Signer's to assist work colleagues to communicate effectively with the new employee.	Individuals with a disability have been employed with Council and their special needs were successfully negotiated Employment opportunities for people with a disability are being addressed by Council.

Liverpool Access Committee

The Access Committee meets on the second Wednesday of each month to address issues affecting disabled access in Liverpool. These issues may include footpaths, car parks, public facilities etc.

Membership of the Access Committee is open to people with disabilities or representatives of people with disabilities and is convened by Council's Aged and Disability Worker. As a committee of Council, elected Council members are also part of the committee.

The Liverpool Access Committee can help you if you are experiencing access difficulties due to a disability or if you have identified a barrier. You can make contact with the Committee in order to have these matters discussed and addressed. You can raise access matters with the Committee by filling in an Access Notification Form, which is available through under 'Related Documents' to the right of your screen.

The Liverpool Access Committee meets on the second Wednesday of each month in the Liverpool Room, Council's Administration Centre, 1 Hoxton Park Road, Liverpool.

Ageing and Disability Forum

Liverpool City Council supports and resources the Ageing and Disability Forum. The Forum is a meeting for all ageing and disability services in Bankstown, Fairfield and Liverpool, that meets monthly for the purpose of sharing information, identifying home and community care service needs and lobbying for improvements to service delivery.

It aims to provide an environment of mutual support, co-operation, networking and information sharing for ageing and disability and ageing and disability related services providers and to be a voice for the needs of the Bankstown, Fairfield and Liverpool target group.

Forum objectives:

To provide the opportunity for ageing and disability related service providers to advocate/lobby on issues of concern for the target group
To identify gaps in services for the target group in South West Sydney and make recommendations to relevant government bodies
To provide an opportunity to identify and co-ordinate training opportunities
To facilitate and coordinate regional planning with the aim of making recommendations to the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care (DADHC) and other relevant bodies regarding funding needs for consideration in future planning
To provide opportunities for discussion of issues affecting the target group, services and the industry in order to consider courses of action
To work on coordinated projects that will address issues affecting the target group in the region.

Council's Aged and Disability Worker works in partnership with local services to ensure that the needs of older people and people with a disability are better met.

2009 meeting dates & venues

All meetings are on the first Tuesday of the month from 9.00 to 11.30am

February-June meetings are held at Bankstown City Council
July - December meetings are held at Fairfield City Council
