Sexual Health Week 2007

Community 2168 received sexual health week funding to increase awareness of sexual health and healthy relationships among young people.  Young people in the 2168 postcode area will produce their own “zines” as part of a Sexual Health Week activity. A series of workshops on sexual health provided young people with valuable information that they are translating into their own medium - zines - through free expression. Producing zines offers a way for young people to learn more about sexual health and healthy relationships, and create resources that raise awareness of sexual health issues among other young people in the region. There are no rules about making zines, so they may include pictures, magazine images, handwritten text, facts, opinions, computer printed text, cut-outs from other sexual health promotional material - anything goes! The project will enable young people to create their own meaningful understanding of sexual health issues in a fun way. As a form of underground media, the zines will be photocopied and distributed through the young people involved to shops, schools, other young people and organisations. The zines will be anti-copyright so they can be copied and distributed freely. The project was launched during Sexual Health Week with an information day and BBQ at Miller Square on 14 September.

living streets in 2168 project

Community 2168 also aims to work with residents and local organisations to improve the way the area looks. Residents are consulted about their priorities and suggestions on how to improve the area at local Speakouts.

The main aim of the Living Streets Program is to transform public space in the Liverpool and Warwick Farm areas to create a sense of place, which promotes liveability, safety and amenity.

As a result of consultations, the Living Streets in 2168 Project was developed. The project delivers strategies based in the 2168 that beautify public spaces for residents. Some of the priorities of this project include art installations in the local area and the development of community gardens

Various sites are being improved through the following projects:

  • Miller Street Art Gallery involving 17 large scale murals at Miller Square
  • Ongoing development of the Community 2168 Organic Veggie Garden and Orchard based Miller Technology High School
  • Completion of The Gathering Place community garden at Heckenberg Busby Neighbourhood Centre, Busby
  • Establishment of an organic community garden and meeting place at Anglicare, Sadleir
  • Establishment of a 'youth chill out space' community garden at Liverpool PCYC, Miller
  • Art installations at T-Way stops in and around the 2168 area through the Youth T-Way Art Project
