What is Fridge Buyback?
The Fridge Buyback Program is a successful residential energy efficiency and greenhouse reduction program that collects working second fridges from residents' homes across metropolitan Sydney.
Fridge Buyback started in August 2006 and in two phases to July 2007 collected, degassed and recycled more than 3,650 fridges, resulting in estimated residential greenhouse emission reductions of over 33,000 tonnes CO2e, approximately 329,000 kilograms of metals recycled and electricity bill savings for participants of over $4.6 million. The next phase will collect 19,000 fridges over the next 3 years saving 150,000 tonnes CO2e and savings for participants of over $24 million.
Fridge eligible for this program must be:
- Switched on and working
- The second fridge in the house, e.g. beer fridge
- 250 litres or more in size
- 10 years old or older
- A second fridge, that is, you have three or more fridges that are all currently switched on and working and meet the size and age requirements.
What does the resident receive?
Residents with fridges that qualify will receive free-in-home collection by experienced removalists if 20 stairs or less involved in removal.
- Residents will receive a $35 rebate if six stairs or less are involved in removal
- Removals involving 21 or more stairs will not involve a payment and will incur a fee which will be negotiated directly with the removalists prior to collection
- Residents are expected to save an average of $190 per year on their electricity bills and will be avoiding 1 tonne per year of greenhouse gas emissions.
If you have a working second fridge that appears to meet the eligibity criteria, please call Fridge Buyback on 1800 708 401 or visit www.fridgebuyback.com.au
