How can I access documents and information from Council?
Most general enquiries can be answered by Council's Customer Contact Centre staff. Call the Customer Contact Centre on 1300 26 2170 or visit Council's Administration Centre.
If the Customer Contact Centre is unable to answer your enquiry, they will refer you to the appropriate Council officer or our Corporate Services team. In some instances, depending on the nature of your enquiry, you may be required to submit an Access to Document Form.
Council's Access to Documents Policy entitles any person to view most documents held by Council. This policy is based primarily on the Local Government Act, 1993 s12.
Which Council documents are confidential?
Whether a document is confidential or not, depends on the circumstances. For example, any person may apply to view a development file for a particular property, however, if the applicant is the owner of the property then their access to the file is broader than that of an applicant who is not the owner.
Some documents are confidential regardless of the circumstances. For example, documents that are legally categorised as professionally privileged remain confidential even under subpoena.
The majority of Council documents are available to the public. However, in some circumstances, it may be necessary to respect people's privacy and security and any agreements about confidentiality and copyright.
Who is my point of contact?
The main point of contact at Council is the Public Officer. The Public Officer will handle requests on Council matters, assist you to gain access to Council's public documents, and receive submissions to Council.
