Liverpool Celebrates its 207th birthday

2 November 2017

Liverpool is turning 207 on 7th November 2017. To celebrate, there will be a Citizenship ceremony for new Australian Citizens, Order of Liverpool Awards and a cake cutting ceremony at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre.

“Back in 1810, Governor Lachlan Macquarie wrote in his journal about the suitability of the region for a city, which he named in honour of the Earl of Liverpool,” said Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller.

“This birthday celebration is about coming together as a community to embrace our rich heritage and recognise the growth our city has experienced over 207 years.

“Since its foundation, Liverpool has progressed significantly, developing into a prosperous and diverse city that we can all be proud of.

“Liverpool has been built on the combined contributions of the traditional Aboriginal custodians and those who came later from all over the world.”

Each year Council recognises the achievements of local people and the contributions they have made to enhance the quality of life within our city, in a voluntary capacity. Known as the Order of Liverpool Awards, the awards were created in 1979 by Noel Short, who was Mayor of Liverpool from 1972-73, and again from 1978 to 1983.

“I was brought up in Liverpool and eventually became a police prosecutor and then Mayor,” said Mr Short.

“In 1975, Prime Minister Gough Whitlam decided to create some new awards for Australians, which he called the Order of Australia Awards.

“I could see how there were many good people in Liverpool and they deserved some kind of recognition so I came up with our own unique awards.”

There are three categories: The Companion of the Order of Liverpool is the most prestigious of the awards, followed by the Officer of the Order of Liverpool and the Member of the Order of Liverpool.
