Councillor Tina Ayyad was elected Deputy Mayor of Liverpool at the Council meeting on 27 September 2017.

Councillor Ayyad replaces Councillor Ali Karnib as Deputy Mayor and will serve in the role from September 2017 to September 2018.

“I am humbled and honoured to be voted in as Deputy Mayor,” said Councillor Ayyad. “Thank you to all my colleagues who supported me and I look forward to undertaking the role.”

Mayor Wendy Waller hailed the appointment as an historic moment.

“This is a great opportunity for Liverpool: for the first time ever we have three women running the show – a female Mayor, CEO and now Deputy Mayor,” she said.

“Not only is our city changing for the better but the people making the key decisions are changing too. Now is the time for the women of Liverpool to shine.”

Councillor Ayyad was elected to Council in 2016.

“Liverpool is a beautiful city and community and I love living here,” said Councillor Ayyad.

“As the mother of two young boys, I want to make sure that all families have a safe and clean community with great parks and plenty of footpaths.

“My most important goal is to listen to the community and deliver on what they would like to see in our city.”

Liverpool City Council appointed its first-ever female CEO, Kiersten Fishburn, in December 2016. Councillor Wendy Waller was the first woman to be elected Mayor of Liverpool in 2008 and was re-elected as Mayor in 2016. She is also an Executive Member of the Australian Local Government Women's Association NSW.

“I’ve always supported women in local government, regardless of their political persuasion,” said Mayor Waller.

“I would also like to thank Councillor Ali Karnib for his work as Deputy Mayor over the last 12 months.”

At the Council meeting on 27 September, Liverpool Councillor Mazhar Hadid also congratulated Councillor Ayyad.

“Liverpool City Council has created history by having three women in these positions: I would like to congratulate all three lovely ladies,” he said.
