National Tree Day

National Tree Day is Australia's biggest community tree-planting event!

This Planet Ark event is supported by Toyota, AMP Foundation and Liverpool City Council. Over 13 million native trees and shrubs have been planted by more than 2 million volunteers since the first National Tree Day was held in 1996!

On Sunday 2nd August 2009, Liverpool City Council celebrated National Tree Day at Light Horse Park. Thank you to all the volunteers who turned out to help plant trees. It was a very successful day with 162 volunteers helping to plant 2,010 plants. After planting, volunteers were treated to a well earned sausage sizzle provided by the Liverpool Lions Club. We would also like to thank Hoxton Park Rural Fire Brigade who watered plants on the day.

Liverpool City Council is once again inviting local residents and their families to help celebrate the biggest tree planting event of the year- National Tree Day.  National Tree Day is a fun day out for the whole family - planting a tree is an activity that everyone can enjoy.

Date:         Sunday 1 August 2010

Time:       9:00am to 12:00pm

Location:  TBA

Each year, with the help of the local community, Council aims to plant over 5,000 locally native trees, shrubs and groundcovers.  Planting locally native plants will provide food and shelter for native wildlife and enhance the amenity of the local area. There will be a face painter on site for children and an interactive native wildlife display for everyone to enjoy.

Participants are reminded to wear enclosed shoes, a hat, sunscreen and a long sleeved shirt, and to bring a water bottle and gloves if they have them.  Council will provide all tools and refreshments, including a free BBQ lunch for all participants.

Schools are also encouraged to participate in tree planting. Each year approximately 200,000 Australian school students participate in Schools Tree Day - a day especially designed for school students. It's a great opportunity to learn about the role of trees in the environment and contribute positively to the natural environment in which we live in.

The next Schools Tree Day will be held on Friday 30th July 2010. For more information visit the Schools Tree Day website
