With one of the largest intakes of refugees in Australia, and one of the most culturally diverse communities, Liverpool declared itself a ‘Refugee Welcome Zone’ in 2004. This was an initiative of Liverpool City Council and the Refugee Council of Australia, demonstrating Council’s commitment to refugee communities in Liverpool.

In recognition of the valuable contributions refugees make to the Liverpool community, Liverpool City Council has been supporting the Liverpool Refugee Week Committee to present the Refugee Week awards during Refugee Week since 2003.
