Barking Dogs

All dogs bark - it's natural.  Unfortunately, it can be annoying for neighbours.

Image of and dog howlingDogs can bark because they are:

  • Seeking attention
  • Bored
  • Lonely
  • Anxious
  • Socially isolated
  • Protecting their territory.

There are a range of simple effective solutions that may reduce your dog barking, these can be viewed in the barking dog fact sheet.  There are also steps you can take if a neighbour's pet is causing you problems.

Talk to the owner of the dog in a friendly and polite way.  They may not be aware of the problem.

If the owner is unapproachable or does not agree that a problem exists, you can contact the Community Justice Centre or the Chambers of Magistrate.  They provide free mediation, which is impartial, confidential and available after hours.

If these methods do not work you should contact Liverpool City Council's Customer Service Centre on 1300 36 2170.

Where there is a barking dog issue, you must keep a record of the date and times of the barking dogs and submit a two week diary record to Council.
