State Emergency Service (SES)

When natural disasters strike, the volunteers of the State Emergency Service (SES) are always there to help the community.

You see the SES during emergencies such as bushfires, storms and floods – they’re the guys and girls cleaning up the damage and rescuing trapped and distressed people and animals.

The rest of the year, they combine their rescue work with community work such as crowd control or marshalling at events such as the City to Surf, Sydney Marathon, Clean Up Australia Day and many council events – they’re the most versatile and widely used rescue and public safety organisation in NSW.

The SES was established by the state government after the disastrous 1955 floods in which more than 50 people lost their lives.

In 1989, the State Emergency Service Act, 1989 came into effect. Under the Act, the police, ambulance service, fire brigade and rural fire service can call on the SES for help in emergencies.

There’s a unit of the SES in every local government area and Council is proud to support our unit at Pearce Street, Liverpool.

To obtain emergency assistance in times of storms and floods call 132 500 or for information on how to join the SES call 1800 201 000 or visit the NSW State Emergency Service website.
