Changing the face of the Liverpool City Centre

Liverpool is experiencing a period of exciting change and many new developments are improving the look of the city centre.

This private and public development brings increased economic prosperity, activity and social amenity to the Liverpool City Centre.  In recognition of this and to further encourage investment in the city, Council is actively creating a attractive and vibrant city centre with an ambitious program of streetscape upgrades.  This includes:

  • New street furniture
  • New pavements
  • Extensive tree planting
  • Landscaped boulevards
  • New pocket parks
  • Outdoor eating areas
  • Public art

Council is encouraging owners and tenants of shops and commercial premises in selected streets to participate in this process by upgrading the façades and awnings of their building and shopfronts.

About the scheme

This scheme applies to the owners and tenants of commercial properties on:

  • Northumberland Street
  • Moore Street
  • Macquarie Street
  • Memorial Avenue
  • George Street
  • Scott Street
  • Elizabeth Street
  • Railway Street.

The aim of the City Centre Façade Scheme is to beautify our city centre by upgrading the façades and the streetscapes.

To make it happen we need productive partnership with you the central business proprietors.

Council is offering a generous financial subsidy to assist in the proposed shopfront improvements. The subsidy is being offered on a capped dollar for dollar basis for pre-approved work which occurs above and below the awning. There is also a subsidy for providing disability access into individual premises.

The Liverpool City Centre Façade Upgrade Scheme brochure provides all the information you will need about the scheme and includes:

  • The financial details of the proposal
  • How Council funding works?
  • Advice on the steps needed to apply
  • Guidelines
  • General conditions
  • Application form.

Owners and tenants will be required to remove all unnecessary or illegal signage from their properties as part of this process.

Applications for funding must be approved Council and will be dealt with on a first come first served basis until the annual financial allocation is expended.  Applications for subsidy on façade work which has already been undertaken or is in process will not be considered.

Please read the attached information carefully and if you require further assistance contact Council on 1300 36 2170.  We look forward to working in partnership to create an attractive streetscape.
