The Living Streets Program

In 1997 the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning, through its Western Sydney Area Assistance Scheme, funded Liverpool Council for a community and cultural development program.  The program focuses on the inner city residents of Liverpool, and has become known as the Living Streets Program.

About the program

Living Streets is a community project based in the area of Liverpool between Terminus Street, the Hume Highway, the Georges River and Collingwood House. It is a chance for local people to say what they would like their neighbourhood to be like in the future.

The main aim of the Living Streets program is to use the community and cultural development strategies within specific streets of Liverpool to create a sense of place, which promotes liveability, safety and amenity.

The objectives of the Living Streets Program are:

  • To initiate and develop opportunities for members of the community to participate in community cultural development projects
  • To work inclusively with resident visibility and liveability with an aim to highlight and improve the neighbourhood issues that shape everyday lives
  • To identify some cultural and social needs of the community
  • To challenge the negative image of the area
  • To improve access and provide a cultural or recreational facility that the local community can use
  • To develop communication networks within the community and between the community and outside agencies (including Liverpool City Council)
  • Direct the project to NESB (non-English speaking background) and at-risk communities
  • To develop a sustainable model framework beyond the project which is transferable to other communities.

The success of the Living Streets Program

The success of the Living Streets program rests on the active engagement and responsibility of the following participants in the area:

  • Residents
  • Community agencies
  • Liverpool City Council
  • Liverpool Migrant Resource Centre
  • Police
  • Fairfield and Liverpool Youth Health Teams
  • Department of Housing.

The ideas and comments of the residents and local businesses have become part of the Living Streets strategy.

Place making

Place making in the Living Streets program examines the spaces we live in and the way we utilise those spaces. It looks at residents lifestyle and how they connect or identify with the environment they live in.

Place making is about improving an urban environment so people feel safer and happier. It also looks at the visibility of the communities which live there, understanding who your community is, your neighbours and the people you share your environment with.

Living Streets is a place making program that seeks to improve the liveability of its streets by exploring, consulting and working with the people that live there.
