With the introduction of Council's new waste service in July 2009, some areas within the Liverpool local government area are presenting a high level of contamination in their recycling (yellow lid) and garden waste (green lid) bins.
Council is reminding residents to sort and dispose of their household waste in the right bins; to help reduce contamination and avoid an overall increase in the domestic waste charge for all residents.
As part of Council’s ongoing education program, photographic evidence of garden and recycling bin contents will soon be used to inform residents of incorrect disposal.
The waste content will only be photographed once bins are placed on the kerbside ready for collection and emptied into the waste collection truck.
-
Different areas will be selected for monitoring, to help Council gather valuable information about common contaminants that are being placed in recycling and garden waste bins.
-
It’s also an opportunity to give positive feedback and advice to residents to help improve their recycling habits.
-
The most common problem is the use of plastic bags in both garden waste and recycling bins.
-
Residents need to separate their general waste from garden waste and recyclable materials.
-
Bin liners, plastic bags and any bags marked as degradable, biodegradable or compostable should not be placed in recycling or garden waste bins.
The garden and recycling waste is hand-sorted at our waste facility and wrong materials placed in just one bin can contaminate an entire truckload.
Residents who have had their bins inspected will be notified by letter following the inspection. If a garden and/or recycling bin are found to have contaminants, photographic evidence will be sent to the household.
This program has been implemented as a result of data feedback that some areas within the Liverpool Local Government Area are contributing a high level of contaminants to the recycling and garden waste collections.
