Clothing

There are many ways to dispose of clothing! If the clothing is still in good condition, you could consider:

  • holding a swap party with friends and family
  • selling them at a second hand market
  • donating them to a charity store. Many charities provide clothing bins for you to recycle your old clothing. These bins are usually situated in the car parks of local shopping centres or the car parks of churches, places of worship or schools.

Please remember that these bins are for clothing only so do not leave anything else for disposal, as you will be disadvantaging the charity. Whatever you leave must be disposed of so if for example you were to place a mattress next to the bin that would cost the charity about $50 to dispose of it at the landfill, plus transportation costs.
If the clothing is made of cotton/cotton blend and cannot be worn, cut them up and use them as cleaning rags.

If the clothing cannot be repaired and reused, only then, as a last resort, dispose of it in your Council-supplied red-lid waste bin.

Illegal waste

Illegal Dumping is the disposal of any type of waste in an area where it is not permitted.

Illegal dumping costs the Liverpool Community more than $200,000 per year. Dumped waste can consist of dangerous items such as syringes, asbestos and toxic waste. It attracts disease carrying pests, as well as degrading the amenity of the community.

Within the Liverpool Local Government Area (LGA) the source of most illegal  dumps can be traced back to householders and is especially common around multi-unit dwellings (flats or units) and areas that attract transient residents.

Common items found dumped include unwanted household materials like furniture, white goods, mattreses, building and renovation materials or garbage bags full of rubbish.

Why is illegal dumping a problem?

Dumped rubbish harms the environment, is unslightly, unhealthy, attracts vermin and can be a physical and fire hazard. Dumped rubbish also attracts more dumped rubbish, so the pile of rubbish just gets larger and more unslightly.

What happens if you get caught?

The State Government has set fines that can be issued on the spot, ranging from $750 to $5,000 issued on the spot, or up to $22,000 in Local Court. If your waste has been illegally dumped by another person, you are just as liable.

If you see someone dumping rubbish please phone Council's Rangers and Parking Unit on 1300 36 2170

Insulation batts

Special disposal required! Do NOT dispose of this type of waste in your domestic waste service!

Insulation batts can be constructed from many types of material including paper, fibreglass, rockwool or foam. They rarely contain asbestos however the same care and precautionary measures must be taken when handling this waste. Nowadays insulation batts are usually made with man-made material fibres more commonly known as 'SFW - Synthetic fibre waste' or 'SMF - Synthetic Mineral Fibre' . The dust generated from these material fibres often contain microscopic particles which irritate skin and eyes and are easily inhaled into the lungs. For this reason most waste transfer stations request that the disposal of SMF meet the following conditions:

- SMF needs to be well contained, wrapped and sealed in heavy duty plastic bags or builders plastic
- bundles need to be well sealed with duct or joining tape so as to contain dust and microscopic fibre particles.
- These bundles need to of a size that is easily handled easily when unloading from the transportation vehicle and well wrapped so that the bundles remain intact.
- bundles need to be unloaded by hand. No mechanical methods are to be used to unload the bundles from the vehicle. Bundles need to be handled in a manner which minimises the release of dust into the air.

Contact your local waste disposal facility for more information about the disposal of insulation batts and other SFW/SMF materials.

Printer Ink Cartridges

Special disposal required! Do NOT dispose of this type of waste in your domestic waste service!

Don't throw away your empty cartridge just yet! It is possible to get it refilled. Not only is it more economical to refill it's also better for the environment.

The best cartridges to buy are those which have individual cartridges for each colour. So that when one colour runs out you do not need to throw away the whole cartridge.

Most electronics manufacturers offer a cartridge recycling service to their customers. Once the cartridge can no longer be refilled send it back to the manufacturer for remanufacturing.

There are a number of professional cartridges refilling companies.  Simply google the words "refill" and "cartridge". Just be sure to check that warranties are not voided if you decided to use a cartridge that you've refilled.s

Televisions

Special disposal required! Do NOT dispose of this type of waste in your domestic waste service!

Televisions are classified as e-waste. E-waste is electronic and electrical waste of all types, and includes but is not limited to TVs, computers, sound equipment (such as stereos and CD players), VCRs, DVDs, and electronic toys. NEVER place these items in your household garbage or recycling bins.

If the television is not working check to see whether it can be repaired by an electrician. If you have an analog television, purchase a set top box - the analog-to-digital switch has commenced. Go to the www.digitalready.gov.au/ website for more information.

Check to see whether you can pass your unwanted electronic and electrical items to a friend or family member. Perhaps consider selling it, just make sure to remove all personal data from the harddrive first! Or check with a local charity if they are in need of electronic or electrical items.

Liverpool recently hosted its first e-waste drop-off day (free for Liverpool City Council residents) which was very successful. We comllected almost 60 tonnes! Our next e-waste day event will again be well-advertised via newspaper advertisments, media releases, letterbox drop and through this website. Click here for more information about e-waste in Liverpool City Council.

If you urgently need to dispose of e-waste, please contact your local e-waste recycler. Fees may apply.
