World Environment Day

World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June every year in over 100 countries. World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 with the purpose of being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action.

Each year is given a theme. The theme for 2012 was "Green Economy: Does It Include You?" The UN Environment Programme defines the Green Economy as one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. A green economy can be thought of as one which is low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive. The theme for World Environment Day 2013 will be announced in January 2013.
