Liverpool residents say NO to 30km/hr speed limit in CBD

More than 600 people have flooded Liverpool City Council’s Facebook page with comments overwhelming opposing Transport for NSW’s trial of a 30km/h speed limit in the Liverpool CBD.

Mayor Ned Mannoun said Council had received more than 1000 survey responses in the first 24 hours, with residents largely opposing the trial which been in place for close to two years.

“The speed limit was implemented in the majority of our CBD back in 2020. As Mayor, I am committed to making Liverpool better, including determining whether this new speed limit serves any benefit to my community.

“It’s clear that the people of Liverpool have spoken and vehemently oppose the 30km/hr trial that has been imposed upon our CBD – with some feedback indicating that residents even avoid this area because of the draconian speed limit.

“We want our people to feel welcome in our CBD, to travel freely without fear of excessive and unnecessary measures being imposed upon them.

“Our residents have taken this opportunity to tell the NSW Government exactly what they think and we will be expressing this feedback in no uncertain terms directly to Transport for NSW.

“The feedback received will be incredibly useful in determining Council’s next actions regarding the 30km/h speed limit,” Mr Mannoun concluded.

Other Facebook feedback included:

“I think it causes drivers to be too focused on their speedo rather focused on the pedestrians around them. It also confusing as it is different to the normal road rules.” Jennifer Reddish

“It’s so confusing for so many. I personally have had 4 speeding fines in the CBD four consecutive weeks on the same day I drive for my work. And only a few kms over. Very hard to keep to that speed when you have moronic drivers behind you wanting to go more than the 30kms. Driving in Liverpool is not pleasant anymore, I have been driving here for 45 yrs plus” Cheryl Staunton

“Absolutely ridiculous, never have I seen a 30km anywhere else. Didn’t even know it was there untill we got a fine for going 41km/h in that area while going to the hospital to see my Dad the day he passed away. Absolute joke.” Vicki Walgers
