Liverpool residents are invited to join in this year’s NAIDOC Week festivities, with Council hosting three events to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
On Monday 9 July there will be a community street march through Macquarie Mall to Bigge Park, with food stalls and live entertainment. On Tuesday 10 July, Christine Anu will perform live at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, followed by a corroboree. On Wednesday 11 July there will be a family fun day at Miller Community Centre.
“Last year we had a good turnout for our NAIDOC Week street march, but this year I would like to see even more people come along to show their respect for Aboriginal culture,” said Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller.
“The theme of this year’s NAIDOC Week is ‘Because of Her, We Can!’, which highlights the vital role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played and continue to play at local, state and national levels.
“They have been at the forefront of the movement for social change – many while caring for families – and have helped to break down gender stereotypes; yet they have not received the recognition they deserve.
“Liverpool City Council welcomes the sharing of the heritage, knowledge and culture of our Indigenous peoples and recognises their rightful position as custodians of this land.
“Council adopted the Reconciliation Action Plan 2016-2020, which is a positive step forward in building respect and promoting social inclusion and equality.”
