When flooding is likely to cut evacuation routes or inundate property, the NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) issues an Evacuation Warning to indicate that Residents should get prepared to evacuate. Being prepared will allow Residents to respond quickly if an Evacuation Order is issued.

What you need to do:

  • Drive slowly, plan your route carefully to avoid any flooded roads and allow extra travel time. Damage to roads and buildings caused by flooding may still exist in you area
  • Remain vigilant as there could still be water in low lying areas
  • Take care as local roads could still have water over them.
  • Stay with family, friends, or at accommodation outside of flood areas. If you are unable to do so an evacuation centre has been established at Cabra-Vale Diggers, 1 Bartley Street, Canley Vale, NSW 2166

If your property has been affected by floodwater:

  • Make sure your property is safe before entering. Check for damage to windows, walls and the roof and be careful of potential dangers including asbestos.
  • Make sure the electricity and gas is turned off before going inside. Use a torch to carry out inspections inside buildings
  • If power points, electrical equipment, appliances or electrical hot water systems have been exposed to floodwater, or are water damaged in any way, they must be inspected by a qualified electrician before use
  • Gas appliances and gas bottles that have been exposed to flood water should be inspected for safety before use
  • Wear suitable protective clothing, including boots and gloves when cleaning up
  • Be aware of any slip, trip or fall hazards
  • Never eat food which has been in contact with floodwater
  • Only use clean utensils and personal items
  • Have a supply of fresh drinking water

The Insurance Council of Australia advises the following:

  • Safety is the priority - don’t do anything that puts anyone at risk.
  • Only return to your property when emergency services give the go ahead.
  • If water has entered the property, don't turn on your electricity until it has been inspected by an electrician.
  • Contact your insurance company as soon as possible to lodge a claim and seek guidance on the claims process.
  • Don’t worry if you can’t find your insurance papers, your insurer can still help you.
  • Let your insurer know if you’ve sustained roof damage, your insurer will arrange emergency works to minimise any hazards and prevent further damage.
  • You can start cleaning up (but see NSW SES notes above about protective clothing etc) but first take pictures or videos of damage to the property and possessions as evidence for your claim.
  • Keep samples of materials and fabrics to show your insurance assessor.
  • Remove water or mud-damaged goods from your property that might pose a health risk, such as saturated carpets and soft furnishings. (Please see above note from SES NSW about what do when cleaning)
  • Make a list of each item damaged and include a detailed description, such as brand, model and serial number if possible.
  • Store damaged or destroyed items somewhere safe.
  • Speak to your insurer before you attempt or authorise any building work, including emergency repairs, and ask for the insurer’s permission in writing. Unauthorised work may not be covered by your policy.
  • Do not throw away goods that could be salvaged or repaired.
  • Do not drive your vehicle if it has suffered water damage.
