Two-way traffic conversion

Liverpool Council is making our CBD a safer, simpler and smarter place to navigate.

What we are doingTwo way map
Council is preparing to convert Northumberland and George Streets into a two-way traffic zone in order to improve the flow and movement of traffic within our city centre.

In 2014 Council engaged an independent traffic consultant to investigate improvements to the city’s traffic flow, and provide recommendations to council.

As a result of this study and ongoing community feedback Council voted to adopt a two-way traffic flow on the basis that it will:

  •    Reduce distances and times travelled within the CBD
  •    Simplify the movement of pedestrians and traffic
  • Improve access to commercial and retail precincts
  • Improve accessibility to major car parks and laneways
  • Improve traffic flow and operation of traffic signals in the area; and
  • Enhance safety at pedestrian crossings.
The changes ahead:

In order to prepare for this two-way traffic conversion, Council began upgrading serviceways along George Street on Monday by constructing pedestrian pram ramps, upgrading kerb and guttering and installing concrete crossings.

Council anticipates the works will take two weeks to complete before the same improvements are then made to Northumberland street serviceways in early March.

All works will take place Monday to Friday between 7:00pm and 5:00am except Thursday, which will be 9.30pm 5am. Council is undertaking works through the night in bid to minimise disruptions.

Barring any major disruptions all works are scheduled to be finished before May 31 when the conversion process will then take place.
They will improve access for motorists entering, exiting and travelling within the CBD.

Keeping you informed:

Visual Messaging Signs and changed traffic condition signs will advise motorists and pedestrians of any changes to traffic movements throughout the city. Council will also keep residents updated online, through newspaper ads and on social media.

This is all part of Council’s plan to improve our city centre and make the movement and flow of traffic simpler, smarter and safer for everyone.
