Liverpool Municipality 150th Anniversary

In 2022 Liverpool marked 150 years of its own local government, following the granting of municipality status to the area on 27 June 1872.

This is an important milestone along with 40,000+ years of First Nations heritage, the founding of the town of Liverpool in 1810, and the granting of city status to Liverpool in 1960.

In 1972 the 100th anniversary of Council was marked by the Liverpool Festival of Progress. A time capsule was also buried in 1972 and will be unearthed as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations later this year.

The City Crest

The origins of a crest or coat of arms dates back to the Medieval period where these symbols of a family, community or land owner, were a symbol of strength and leadership.

Liverpool Regional Museum

The museum presents and collects items reflecting environmental, heritage and social themes within south-west Sydney.

Acknowledgement of Country

We would like to acknowledge the Cabrogal Clan of the Darug Nation who are the traditional custodians of the land that now resides within Liverpool City Council’s boundaries. We acknowledge that this land was also accessed by peoples of the Dharawal and Darug Nations.
