Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun moves to rename Badgerys Creek to recognise First Nation inhabitants

Liverpool City Council has agreed to a proposal by its Mayor, Ned Mannoun, to support the renaming of the Badgerys Creek suburb in recognition of the original occupants, the Cabrogal clan.

The move was endorsed at yesterday’s Council Meeting (27 July 2022) via a formal Mayoral Minute.

“With the new airport suburb taking shape now is time to take action to ensure the name appropriately recognises this sacred land,” Mayor Mannoun said.

Mayor Mannoun added when tourists step off planes at the new Western Sydney International Nancy-Bird Walton Airport they will know they are arriving on Aboriginal land.

“This is not only wonderful, it’s appropriate,” Mayor Mannoun said.

“The acknowledgement of the First Nations heritage of the land in the name of a new suburb presents an opportunity to educate international and domestic visitors, raising awareness and promoting Australia’s First Nations people and culture, the oldest known living culture in the world.

“This is part of reconciliation and co-creation. I think we should fast track our endorsement with the relevant government authorities.”

Liverpool City Council will now undertake community consultation to rename parts of the suburb of Badgerys Creek to Cabrogal which will include extensive consultation with the local Aboriginal community, as well as the Geographical Names Board of NSW.

The process is consistent with the requirements of the NSW Place Name Policy.

Council also supported the proposed name of the nearby suburb of Bradfield.
